Bharatiya Yuva Shakti Trust organized a Mentor Get-together on “Sprit of Mentoring” on 6th August, 05 at Hotel Raviraj, Pune. The main objectives of the get together were to review the status and achievement of BYST Pune & Rural Maharashtra Program in past years, Elaboration on mentoring in BYST and latest development in it, Curtain raiser on Mega Conference planned for 11th November 2005 and to thank all our members for their tremendous support in making the Pune program one of the best programs of BYST.

It was fully sponsored by Mr. Surendra Agarwal, COO, Neilsoft Tech. Pvt. Ltd., which has provided a platform to all BYST Mentors and Members to share experience & best practice on Mentoring.

Mr. S V Joshi, Member, MAP-BYST and Chairman, Nichrome India Ltd., coordinated the session & welcomed all the speakers, members and entrepreneurs. Members & entrepreneurs introduced themselves in the beginning of the gathering.

Mr Pradeep Bhargava, immediate past chairman CII; Co-chairman, BYST Steering Committee and M.D. Newage Electrical (I) Ltd briefed on BYST and shared with the gathering that BYST was started in 1991 as a pilot programme in Delhi and now is operating in 6 major regions of India-Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Rural Maharashtra and Haryana. He told to the gathering that BYST provides finance, mentoring and end to end support to young people in the age group of 18-35 yrs. He also informed that BYST operates through three main committees, which are ESP, MAP, and Core Committees.

Mr S V Joshi highlighted the achievements of BYST Urban & Rural projects. He shared the success story of urban and rural programme with the audience. He informed that the Pune programme was launched in 1996 with the strong support from Diageo and Rural programme started in 2001 with support from KWF. He said that in a span of nearly 15 years, in India, BYST have supported 1054 (212 women entrepreneurs) young people who have created 10000 more jobs for other people. BYST track record in success rate has been at a relatively high- 95 %. The 250 young people supported in Pune are running businesses from handicrafts to hi-tech electronic products. BYST loan to turnover ratio has been 1:10 and have produced 54 millionaires till date, who initially had started from scratch.

Mr. Surendra Agarwal, Chairman, MAP-BYST and President & COO, Neilsoft Tech., elaborated on the concept of mentoring in BYST. He stated that it’s a unique social and management tool, which is based on the ancient Guru-Shishya parampara. BYST provides mentoring assistance to the youth on one to one basis in Urban areas and Mentor Clinics in Rural areas. The mentors come from the industry and are the top profiled, experienced, learned people, who give their voluntary services in acting as a friend, philosopher and guide to the young entrepreneurs. He also spoke on the role and qualities of a mentor, challenges to mentoring and its future.

Mr. Ajay Joshi, Chairman ESP-BYST and Director Finance Alfa Laval, gave a curtain raiser on the forthcoming Mega Conference on “Empowering Youth Through Entrepreneurship”, which will be celebrated on 11th November 2005 in Pune on the eve of Anti Poverty Day. Speaking on the present unemployment situation in the country, Mr. Joshi said that the objective behind this conference is to create a national focus on developing youth entrepreneurship and thereby bring those disadvantaged youth in to economic mainstream. He also spoke on the prospective Public Private Partnership, which could be launched in the seminar. He said that JRD awards as well as the awards of the Best Business Idea Contest would also be given during that seminar.

Mr. Sunil Malkani, Vice Chairman, MAP-BYST and Proprietor, SUMM Corporation thanked the gathering and stated that the success of the programme is due to continued support of various voluntary organisations, people from industries, bankers, government agencies and very committed individuals. He sought the support of the media for publicising the Trust’s activities so as to reach young and deserving people like Sachin, Pranaya, Manisha, Kishore etc. The Trust hopes to reach out to as many young people as possible in the coming years.

During the occasion Mr. Sachin Patil (Urban) and Ms. Pranaya Patil (Rural), entrepreneurs of BYST shared their experiences. In this get together the BYST entrepreneurs displayed their products, which ranged from sculptures to electronic gadgets.

The conference also saw the display of products made by BYST supported entrepreneurs.
