| “CELEBRATING WORLD MICRO CREDIT YEAR-2005” CONFERENCE
ON CONCEPT NOTE
Youth Empowerment has been a subject of great concern all over the world. Enhancing the participation of the youth in the economic development is the key to their empowerment. In India people between the ages of 15-35 are considered as youth. Unemployment & Poverty afflicts 1.2 billion people in the world. In India today around 70% of youth are unemployed. Self-employment is key to solve this challenge at national level and at the local level in Pune where over 2.8 lakhs of young people are looking for jobs in the formal sector. This number does not even scratch the surface of the unemployment problem in the informal sector. More than 20% of all young people have the potential to become entrepreneurs and hence job creators. But only 5% actually do. In motivating and facilitating the other 15% to take to entrepreneurship, lies the challenge. There
is an ardent need for encouraging dynamic entrepreneurs and through them to create
more jobs. If appropriate support mechanism is provided, to nurture entrepreneurship,
the informal sector can absorb a large part of the growing labour force and create
wealth for the state. The task ahead is still daunting, considering the magnitude
of the problem in our country. Industry, professionals, financial institutions,
NGOs, and the government have to come together to enable the youth in India to
give full play to their intrinsic ingenuity and entrepreneurship capabilities.
As a unique non-profit organization that fosters the entrepreneurial dreams of the young people in India, BYST has built up strong partnership with the Private Sector, the other grass root organizations and the state Government. It is organizing this unique conference to address issues of youth empowerment.
